Intrinsic Viscosity of Polymer and Bio-Polymer Solutions

In previous applications, we have discussed how to measure Intrinsic Viscosity with m-VROC® and microVISC™. Intrinsic Viscosity can be used as a means to establish molecular size, structure and conformation of solute molecules in a given environment. In order to make intrinsic viscosity measurements faster and easier, the number of viscosity measurements can be reduced to a single concentration. In this study we present a comparison of Single-point and Multi-point Intrinsic viscosity methods for a number of polymers and bio-polymers.

Our results show how, thanks to the superior repeatability of VROC® powered systems, both Single-point and Multi-point intrinsic viscosity measurements present good correlation. This allows Intrinsic Viscosity to be used as a fast and easy Q&C indicator with impresive sensitivity to molecular interaction. Remember Intrinsic Viscosity opens the door to the characterization of:

  • Molecular Size and Weight

  • Structure

  • Conformation and Melting Temperature of Protein Solutions
